060711 Touring the Altamaha, Georgia's "Little Amazon"

We had an excellent group on the Norma yesterday for a tour of the Altamaha above Darien.  Leaving from Village Creek Landing we ran an hour to meet our group at the Darien Docks.  We timed the tide up rifle cut, squeezed around a few trees, and made our way up Lewis Creek.  We saw many birds, a few alligators, and only two other boats all day.  Among the birds we saw black-bellied whistling ducks, night herons, lots of egrets, black-necked stilts, grebes, coots, and other ducks among many others.  The birding in the impoundment at Rhetts Island is incredible now, as were the blooming flowers.
